Acoustic panels are sound-absorbing surface coverings that improve sound quality while adding decorative value. They fall into four main groups: fabric-wrapped, wood, felt (PET) and melamine (Basotect). NRC ranges from 0.40-1.00; selection is driven by acoustic goal, visual expectation and durability. All our products carry BS 476 / EN 13501 fire certificates.
What is an acoustic panel?
An acoustic panel combines a carrier (usually a wooden frame or MDF), a sound-absorbing fill (rock wool, polyester or melamine) and an outer face (fabric, wood, felt). Sound waves passing through the surface lose energy in the fill; room reverberation is brought under control. They are used for acoustic treatment and are not sufficient on their own for sound insulation.
Which panel types are available?
- Fabric-wrapped acoustic panel: the most flexible option (NRC 0.80-0.95). Plain, digitally printed and 3D-textured variants available.
- Wood acoustic panel: perforated or slatted profile (NRC 0.55-0.85). Aesthetic and durable.
- Felt (PET) panel: a modern, eco-friendly solution made from recycled polyester (NRC 0.40-0.90).
- Melamine (Basotect) panel: highest performance for professional acoustics (NRC 0.90-1.00).
- Decorative acoustic cladding: stretched fabric or special trim combinations.
Which panel suits which space?
- Studio / cinema: melamine or fabric-wrapped (high broadband absorption)
- Office / meeting: fabric-wrapped (aesthetics + sufficient NRC)
- Premium hotel / restaurant: wood acoustic (warm look)
- Modern education / showroom: felt panel (eco-friendly, flexible design)
- High-ceiling space: suspended baffle or cloud panel
Installation — why is the air gap critical?
The same panel produces very different NRC values depending on installation. A panel glued directly to the wall is weak at low frequency; with a 25-50 mm air gap the performance significantly increases in the 100-250 Hz range. We always use the right mounting system (Z-profile, wood batten, magnetic mount).
Certificates and fire class
If the panel is used in public spaces (hotel, restaurant, office) the fire class is mandatory. All panels we supply carry:
- BS 476 Class 0 surface flame spread
- EN 13501-1 A2-s1, d0 or B-s1, d0
- UNI 9175 Class 1IM
