Sound insulation tapes and gaskets are the complementary products that seal sound leaks at doors, windows, panel junctions and detail points. A single 2 mm gap can cost 5-10 dB of Rw; tape and gasket installation is mandatory to complete the acoustic system.
What are sound insulation tapes and gaskets?
Sound insulation tapes and gaskets are flexible acoustic elements that seal air leaks at door leaf/frame, window frame and panel junctions. They form the sealing layer of acoustic door and window systems; in panel and wall systems they seal corner and joint details.
Product types
- EPDM door gaskets: leaf-perimeter seal
- Foam-backed acoustic tapes: leaf-frame gap
- Drop-down / automatic thresholds: under-door seal
- Double-sided acoustic adhesive tapes: panel installation
- Self-adhesive barrier strips: corner sealing
- Acoustic mastic / sealant: around sockets and conduits
Where they are used
- Around acoustic door leaves and frames
- Acoustic window frame junctions
- Suspended ceiling to wall interface
- Edge strip between floating floor and walls
- Around sockets, switches, distribution boxes
- Service penetrations and wall openings
Why so critical?
- Where air passes, sound passes (acoustic first principle)
- 2 mm gap → 5-10 dB Rw loss
- Correct material + poor detailing = poor performance
- A single leak directly lowers the measured value
- Detail accessories are mandatory in a certified system
Installation
Surfaces are cleaned first and the target joint/gap is measured. Tape or gasket is applied continuously (no breaks) with the right compression. Drop-down thresholds are adjusted to the under-door clearance. Details finished with acoustic mastic must retain their flexibility for the life of the build.
