Cork mat is a floating-floor underlay produced by pressing natural cork granules with an elastomeric binder. With ΔLw 18-22 dB impact-noise reduction, natural composition, easy installation and reasonable cost, it is the standard residential underlay. Also adds a useful thermal insulation contribution.
What is cork mat?
Cork mat is natural cork granules — derived from cork-oak bark — pressed with an elastomeric resin into sheet or roll form. Combined sound + thermal function, natural composition and low density make it the economical standard for residential floating floors.
Technical data
- Density: 180-260 kg/m³
- Thickness: 3 / 5 / 8 / 10 mm
- Sheet: 100×50 cm or 1×10 m roll
- ΔLw: 18-22 dB
- Thermal conductivity: 0.037-0.040 W/mK
- Fire class: European E (Class 1 in a closed system)
Where it is used
- Apartment and detached-house floors
- Under floating screed (or under parquet/laminate)
- Hotel and aparthotel room floors
- Children's rooms and educational spaces
- Indoor spaces where sound + thermal are both wanted
Advantages
- Natural, sustainable, recyclable
- Lightweight (low kg/m²) — easy handling and cutting
- Combined sound + thermal performance
- Antibacterial and moisture-resistant
- Economical compared to rubber sheet
How is it installed?
Cork mat is laid on a clean substrate without overlap; joints are sealed with acoustic tape. A perimeter strip is left along walls. A reinforced screed (min. 4 cm) is poured on top to complete the floating floor; in some applications it is also used directly under parquet/laminate.
